Outgoing coach Vitezslav Lavicka urged his Sydney FC players to believe they can make the A League Grand Final after a dramatic 3-2 final-day win over Newcastle Jets secured the home side a finals berth; a match which also thrilled those taking part in live soccer betting and especially those who followed soccer betting tips to back the Newcastle Jets.
The Sky Blues knew only a win at the Allianz Stadium would keep alive their season and they did not disappoint with an impressive first-half display which saw them take a commanding 3-1 lead at the break.
Bruno Cazarine set the ball rolling before Joel Chianese added a double to guarantee Sydney fifth and a semi-finals showdown at Wellington Phoenix next Friday.
The Jets rallied with a late goal to put the Sky Blues on the back foot but Lavicka’s men held on to claim a gutsy win and can now be backed at 13/1 with bet365 to go all the way (To Win Outright).
It was the perfect send-off for the emotional Czech coach, who will leave his adopted home for the last three years at the end of the season.
“It was a special, emotional game for me,” said the 2010 title-winning coach.
“I have a couple of great memories (here). But this was one of the biggest.”
Lavicka was delighted with the character shown by his players to withstand late pressure from Newcastle Jets.
He added: “I am proud of the players. They did a great job tonight.
“After a performance like this it is easy to be ready and focussed for the finals.”
The win was only Sydney’s sixth of the season on home soil in the A League but the manner of it gave Lavicka plenty of optimism and he urged his players to continue their march towards finals glory.
He said: “Not making the finals would be an unsuccessful season for me. We did, so it is successful but we can go on (further).”
