Judge: Hold ‘Em Poker Is A Skill

Woot!!! As I am writing for the Web, I thought that that exclamation is but appropriate for this piece of news that I just read. It has been a long and intense debate: is poker a game of chance or a game that requires skill?
In the mind of many a poker player, there is no question about it. One definitely needs to be skilled in order to attain success in the game. In the eyes of other people, however, poker is mainly all about luck. Who to believe? I would say that those who actually have experience in the game should know better. Then again, there are those who argue that these people are biased.
But hey, a judge in South Carolina has spoken. And judges are to be trusted, right? This judge, Mount Pleasant Municipal Judge Larry Duffy to be exact, has ruled that Texas Hold ‘Em Poker is NOT a game of chance but of skill. Woot!!!
I suppose that I have to try and be objective about this – the piece had some balancing points:
Though Duffy said evidence was “overwhelming” that poker was a game of skill, he said he did not have enough guidance from higher courts or state lawmakers to know if that analysis makes a difference under South Carolina law.
More so, critics have their own argument:
McMaster’s office called Thursday’s ruling insignificant, but if it is appealed, the South Carolina Supreme Court may eventually have to decide if Texas Hold ‘em is legal in the state. Locally, the ruling could keep police from arresting people involved in friendly house games.
The good thing is that people in South Carolina can at least play in their homes without the fear of being arrested. Now that should have been a given from the get go, right?
Now THIS is great gaming news! What do I do now?
