Does Internet Poker Contribute To Problem Gambling?

Before you answer that, I would ask you to take a moment to consider and think about the situation. Critics and opponents of gambling – whether online or offline – would probably say YES without batting an eyelash. However, if you take some time to think things through, you just might come up with another answer.
Think about it, what is problem gambling all about? What makes a gambler a problematic gambler? Steven Ruddock recently wrote about this same topic and he quoted an Australian study in defining a problem gambler:
Problem gambling is characterized by many difficulties in limiting money and/or time spent on gambling which leads to adverse consequences for the gambler, others, or for the community.
I would say that this definition is quite vague. It does not even make a distinction between online and real time gambling. The root of the problem then is in the attitude and personality of the person who gambles.
While I can see how the accessibility of online poker (or any other game for that matter) may make it easier for problem gamblers to indulge themselves, I cannot ignore the fact that this kind of person craves action. Furthermore, this kind of action is usually to be experienced in real time casinos.
I would be the first to say that online poker is exciting but somehow, it can pale in comparison to the ambiance and experience of playing craps or roulette or any other table game in a real time casino. Perhaps, it is not online poker that is to blame here. What do you think?
