Hope for Problem Gamblers
Gambling has always had a negative connotation to it. Traditionalists and conservatives have always associated gambling with addiction and ultimate ruin. However, this generalization does not always apply to everyone. Still, there are those who encounter gambling addiction and turn out what are termed problem gamblers.
Recently a study was conducted at the University of Prince Edward Island about problem gamblers. Though what was found out is probably something that many people would say is common sense, it is always a good thing when there is scientific evidence to back it up. According to Prof. Jason Doiron, “When we improved people’s thinking about VLT gambling, they tended to gamble less.”
VLT is an acronym for video lottery terminals. Quite obviously, the study was initially limited to this form of gambling. Working on the premise that behind VLTs are random number generators, which have nothing to do with past wins and losses, Prof. Doiron’s group explained the concept to people with signs of gambling problems.
They worked with about 40 Islanders and had them undergo 9 hours of information instruction. After the hours of instruction, the people who underwent the experiment understood the facts of VLT gambling much better and were also more realistic in their approach of other gambling activities.
This is good news for other people who may have loved ones or friends who exhibit signs of gambling problems. Perhaps with early intervention, disaster can be averted. Of course, the catch here is that the problem should be caught at an early stage. Otherwise, the effects of instruction may not be as marked as the results of the study.
Now THIS is great gaming news! What do I do now?
